The City of Popes
Located in Southern France, Avignon is the largest capital of the department of Vaucluse. Classified as a UNESCO world Heritage Site, the charming city centre is home to the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.
The historic Palais des Papes is one of the most significant medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Set within a square with the same name, the Papal Palace is an important tourist attraction where you can see the pope’s private chambers and frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti.
Le Pont d’Avignon was built in the Middle Ages and, according to the legend, a young shepherd called Benezet was inspired by angels to build the bridge. The children’s song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon" is now famous all over the world.
The beautiful gardens of Rocher des Doms are ideal for a promenade or picnic. Featuring a large pond, swans, ducks and lush vegetation, this place is perfect for relaxing moments. From the top, you can enjoy the views of the Rhône.

I liked the city, with Palais du Papes etc, but also the surroundings. I travelled in bus to Pont du Gard, St Remy de Provence (van Gogh area!) and southern part of Parque Natural Régional du Luberon, all very exciting places.

Well worth a visit .
Well worth a visit . It still reflects the mediaeval days of the Popes, but has splendid modern shops, a great market and a whole spectrum of good restaurants and is small enough for old people like us to cope with

Beautiful medieval city with impressive palaces, churches, walls etc. A wonderful place to hang around. After sunset it might feel a bit uncomfortable, however I did not feel particularly unsafe at any point.

Great history and narrow lovely streets to walk through. Visit to Popes old digs and the old bridge were great. Natural museum was free, however it took only 15 minutes to see the collection. Restaurant’s and food there were great as well. Could do without all of the beggars on the street, some who were obviously drunk and quite aggressive constantly asking us for money. Carry some coins just in case you get cornered and feel threatened as it’s the easiest way out of it without risk.

Am I ever glad we did!! This charming B and B was amazing! The ladies were wonderfully accommodating, helpful and charming. Location was perfect the house was beautiful and comfortable. The breakfast was beyond anything I could have asked for and kept me full until late afternoon. When I come back to visit this charming place, I would definitely stay here again. The sound proofing, double glazing was great when we had windows closed. We enjoyed having breakfast each day, it was continental with a wide choice on offer, items regularly topped up and my husband really enjoyed the coffee pods.
