I’ve visited San Jose Costa Rica many times since the 1970s.
I’ve visited San Jose Costa Rica many times since the 1970s. It’s gotten completely jammed with traffic, but it is a beautiful city with lots to see and admire. My favorite is the old concert hall, which I’m blanking on the name, but it is the only concert hall I believe in the city. Being a city it’s always important to watch your pockets, and this is become a problem, the last couple decades. The people in general are very charming and it is definitely worth a visit.

I didn’t really like anything.
I didn’t really like anything. The front desk made me carry my bag up 4 flights of stairs. The room was so hot when I got inside. There was no coffee in the rooms at all and I asked multiple time for it. The shower was also clogged.

San Jose as city is not too much to believe as other cities and is a crowded city We stayed at the outside skirts of San Jose where you have more nature, mountains/scenery and less city life and visited the city several times.

If you like a big city, San Jose is great.
If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.
People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.
I stayed at Hostel Shakti for one night while passing through San Jose. I did leave early in the morning so did not experience Breakfast. Shakti was a very nice hostel. Very clean and super cute. It had very good access to the downtown merchants and food places. Later at night the merchants and restaurants around the hostel did close so you should know to get dinner before you come back to the hostel it is later. There was a wonderful porch terrace at the hostel and I enjoyed speaking with fellow travelers there.
Nice Hotel option with clean rooms and close to everything in San Jose. The Front Desk staff is very attentive Jose, Gabriela, and Eglys were just fantastic. Excellent communication skills spoke Spanish and English. Breakfast in the morning was a great value, I liked the local Gallo Pinto option and Jenny is amazing! Overall, everyone is incredibly generous and helpful with their time and "advice". On my next trip, I'll be returning to this hotel.
Thanks for making my first trip to Costa Rica a memorable experience.!!!
Cozy hotel, close to University of Costa Rica at San José, located in San Pedro. Walkable to the nearest mall (Mall San Pedro - around 15 minutes walking from the hotel), by car it is at 10-15 minutes far away from San José down town. My arriving flight was very early, and they provided me an available room despite I arrived very early morning. Nice breakfast (the common breakfast included gallo pinto -beans and rice-, eggs and fruits, but they offered me several options for breakfast). Lovely staff.
Rooms were plenty spacious and you could not ask for a more central location. We were only in San Jose for a day but we were able to walk to see everything. Also the breakfast was UNREAL - so good and so many options. We also had a drink at their bar after are long flight. The staff was very welcoming and nice. It’s was a great start to our Costa Rica trip and even though we were there for only one night, the hotel left a really welcoming impression.
We stayed at Barcelo as the first hotel for our Honeymoon after our flight to San Jose for 2 nights. The staff were so friendly, they left us a lovely Honeymoon surprise and loved the free snack room with food and drinks :) a huge breakfast selection which was lovely. We loved the pool area and it was just the perfect place to relax after our flight and settle into Costa Rica!
Breakfast was good, room was great! Location was a little tough to find as the roads in San Jose are not marked. We was told to use "Waze" instead of other GPS and as long as you loaded it in wifi area with next location before leaving hotel it worked great. Their Italian restaurant located in front of hotel was best Italian food I have ever had and good prices.
The hotel is a beautiful old building very close to the centre of San Jose. There are good restaurants and bars close by. I read previous reviews worrying about the area but in our view it felt very safe and comfortable. The hotel was very clean and we had a lovely room with balcony. Good breakfast and helpful staff
This hotel was our first stop in Costa Rica. It's a little gem on the outskirts on San Jose, perfect to start your Costa Rican trip. The rooms are spacious and clean, breakfast is served by the cutest lady. We didn't use the pool but that's were breakfast is served and they view was great!
Nice, modern and comfortable Hotel with spacious rooms. Nice pool and gym. We stayed there because between Airport and Downtown but we found out that the traffic to drive in both direction was one of the worst in San José (not Hotel fault though).
Well appointed and beautifully decorated apartment in central San José. Everything downtown is within walking distance. The host is a lovely and attentive gentleman dedicated to guest service. Very comfortable bed and plenty of space.
Sheraton is a First Class Hotel in most desirable area of Escazu (San Jose). The breakfast is the finest I have in all of Costa Rica. The fitness center is great with free weights. Hotel offers casino next door for more activities.
Great hotel near the city center of San Jose. Ideal to stay a night before starting your trip in Costa Rica. Decent rooms, a pleasant swimming pool and an excellent breakfast. The staff was very welcoming.
Very comfortable and pretty small boutique hotel. Staffs are very nice and welcome. Walking distance to downtown San Jose. Breakfast is very good with freshly made juice and coffee. Bread is warm baked.
The downtown location of this hotel allows for exploring San Jose on foot.
The hotel is located in a building with history and charm, which was nice.
The staff was very helpful and polite.
