We live in Cairns, which is only a 5.5-hour drive away from Townsville. We use the town for quick get aways and shopping not available in Cairns.
Plenty of good places to eat with lots of variety from drive through to quality restaurants.
Getting around is pretty easy if you have Google maps or similar. It's very spread out and there seems to be multiple ways to get to some destinations.

Loved the area with friendly people everywhere.
Loved the area with friendly people everywhere. Went to the Museum which my Great nephew really loved. All hands on. Went to Kirwan Bowling and had a great time with all our extended family.
Also went to the Tavern and had a wonderful meal which didn't cost too much.
Spent time on The Strand at the Waterpark and all the kids had a ball splashing around.

It is a nice city surrounded by some rainforest, farmland and bush. Lots to see and do. I loved the museums. I loved the botanical gardens; the hill overlooking Townsville is five minutes drive away from the hotel and you can drive or walk up it. The esplanade is worth the walk. Lots of places eat and drink along it.

This accommodation is exceptional, the apartment has 2 bedrooms and everything you would need and more for a relaxing enjoyable stay, so exceeded our expectations. Very central, short distance to CBD, very close to V8 Super Cars track, Queensland Country Bank Stadium for Cowboys games and more. We highly recommend this accommodation to all guests seeking an amazing place for exceptional value all round to stay at whilst visiting Townsville.
Pleasant organized place if you're trying to keep it simple while exploring the area. Takes about 30 minutes to arrive at the ferry from nearby bus stop. Going back and forth is easy.
Ferry has weekly passes making Townsville Strand, museum, and the island economical and interesting. It takes a week to see it all and Civic Guesthouse has everything to make that happen.
Location is very close to CDB and Palmer street which has several eating and drinking places. Its a short walk to the Strand and both Magnetic Island ferries. The rooms are clean and we had a great view of the city. The gym is ok. The staff are positive and helpful. We had two separate stays within a week and the hotel was happy to store our luggage in between stays.
I am an old bugger who had not been to Townsville for 38 years and expected the hotel to be more central to places for meals etc. I also assumed from your ads that there was a hotel lounge and bar facilities.
However as I told the young lady a the desk it was more that I felt lonely as it was the first time away by myself since widowed.
We stayed here for one night while traveling through Townsville and were pleasantly surprised by how great this place was. The apartment was spacious and comfortable. The property provided an extra mattress for our youngest child. The best were comfortable and it was close to Palmer street which was a lovely walk in the evening.
have stayed numerous times now and love the place. the value for money is great. you are in the quieter end of Palmer street so no noise but a few minute walk to all the cafes, pubs and restaurants. a 10 minute walk and you are on the Strand. and a two minute drive to the Magnetic Island car ferry. We love it.
Location was central to Palmer Street dining precinct with short walk to flinders and short drive to the strand.
The layout of the apartment was good and the air conditioner in good working order. Our room had great view over the river and Flinders street. The beds were also really comfortable.
Waters Edge is a fine place to spend a night or two in Townsville. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. The kitchen facilities are useful, with nice china and cutlery. Good towels in the bathroom. And the location on the Strand is handy to everything.
Excellent location on The Strand & good value for money. Room has excellent views of Magnetic Island. Room was fine & cleaned daily. Short stroll to cafes & rock pool for swimming. Short car ride to Palmer street & Castle Hill
We chose Madison's for it's location as we had stayed in Townsville before. Good location right on The Strand. It has so many eateries close by. We ended up going to four of them during our stay and none of them disappointed.
The pool and bar area were amazing, was definitely more of a resort than a hotel. We loved the place, its atmosphere and staff were so friendly and helpful. We are going to put this one on our return trips to Townsville!
Good easy to find park at a great location opposite esplanade and beachfront. Only minutes away from most amenities e.g. hotels and takeaways. Excellent coastal walk to headland and old fort was nearby. Friendly locals.
We love our quite and peaceful stay at this lodge for 3 nights. The location is a short walking distance to the city centre. The host and his team are friendly and made our stay more enjoyable in Townsville city.
Even though hotel is old, room facilities clean and reasonably updated. Great location on The Strand, close to restaurants and very close to beach
Hotel reception staff very welcoming and friendly
The property was nice and well presented. I am used to staying in hotels a little bit more upmarket but still felt this property was very good and really represented value for money.
Self contained spacious apartment. Comfy large lounge. Great size outside area with fantastic views. Good walking distance to The Strand and Flinders Street.
