If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. Be sure to use the WAZE app instead of Google for driving around. It stays more up to date.

I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas.
When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment.
People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.

We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't.
We stayed here on our last night but wished we hadn't. The hotel was good but there was nothing special about the city and we would have preferred to be back in Alajuela where we stayed on the first night. There was much less traffic there and lots of different birds in the trees. The park in San Jose only had grackles.

There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area.
There is plenty to do in San Jose and the surrounding area. Three places to recommend: the Jade Museum, the Post Office Museum and Lankester Botanical Garden on the road to Paraiso. The Jade Museum is a revelation - it is in a new building and has a wonderful exhibition about the Pre-Colombian inhabitants of Central America. Don't be put off by its title - it is not a museum of dusty cabinets full of jade objects. Just to the right of the entrance to the Central Post Office is a museum with displays of various themes - space, calypso, biodiversity - illustrated with stamps from all over the world. The Lankester Gardens is a gem. It's a centre for the study of orchids so visit at the right time of year, e.g. March, when many are in flower. The gardens are beautifully laid out and very well cared for.

Great city.
Great city. Nice and friendly people with plenty of places to visit, especially their natural parks. Food is good, and the water is safe to drink in the city. Although the locals warned me to be cautious but I felt safe.

We were in San Jose for 2 days; meeting a group coming in from the USA to walk The Camino de Costa Rica so met our outfitter and guide. We visited the Jade Museum and would have gone to the Gold Museum if we had time. We did a long walk in the city to visit a famous hotel ( Grano de Oro). It's a busy city during the day and we were warned not to walk alone at night.
Probably one of the most wonderful hotel experiences I have ever had. Beautiful architecture and decor, mountain views, and excellent service from the staff.
Everything was over the top. They offer an incredible breakfast spread (with many, many juices). Pool/bar area is very luxurious. Adjacent to several shops, a spa, grocery, food truck court (very nice, with a large, collaborative patio area, and restaurants. Also very close to the San Jose airport.
We will return to this magnificent hotel again!
The property was nice and was very clean and comfortable. The hotel is very far from the center of San Jose. A lot of tour companies use this hotel as the starting point to their tours of Costa Rica. If you want to be in San Jose which is very nice to visit do not stay here. It is far from the airport and anything that San Jose has to offer. It will cost you an expensive taxi or Uber ride to get to San Jose and back to the hotel.
The food was so so and expensive. It is better to go out of the hotel to eat.
Santo Tomas is a historic jem in the heart of San Jose. Once you step into the lobby you can see the detail of the furnishing and finishings have been well preserved. The rooms are comfortable and there are several lounge areas throughout where you can relax and mingle with fellow travelers. The pool and hot tub provide relief after a day of exploring the downtown sites, all within walking distance. The (provided) breakfast is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful.
A fantastic family run small hotel. The rooms are very clean and comfortable set around a inner courtyard filled with lovely plants and flowers. Doña Aída is a wonderful host who treats you like a member of her family. She is a wealth of information and can help you with anyrhing you need to sort out. The hotel is in a great location a few minutes walk from the main shopping area of downtown San Jose with great restaurants and a cash machine literally round the corner.
Best hostel in Costa Rica hands down. 4 weeks spent here overall..Wonderful family, I wish I had their love /hoapitality back home. Its quiet, lovely communal area, wonderful breakfast. Great shower, lovely guests. Its awesome. I love it, booked an extra 3 nights. I'm easily pleased but this is the de-facto place to stay I'm San Jose should you be looking for a dorm bed. David is just the best, lovely wife and children. I'll miss it terribly. Thank you David and co.
The apartment is in a shady area of San Jose and shall be chosen only in the case where somebody wants to use the public bases for an overnight stay.
We used uber to go the bus terminal to avoid any possible issues by walking.
This hotel also provides 2-4-8 hour stays which makes it super noisy at night and also the sound proofness is pretty bad.
For its purpose it's OK to rest for a couple of hours.
Very nice little hotel in the barrio escalante, nightlife is at your door: restaurants, bars. Very safe area.
In this hotel we had the best breakfast of all our stays in Costa Rica. Staff is very helpfull, i asked if they had an iron and they gave me one straight away. At walking distance from Mercado Central. We sure will be going back in this hotel. Hotel was very clean, room was cleaned every day.
We stayed at Barcelo as the first hotel for our Honeymoon after our flight to San Jose for 2 nights. The staff were so friendly, they left us a lovely Honeymoon surprise and loved the free snack room with food and drinks :) a huge breakfast selection which was lovely. We loved the pool area and it was just the perfect place to relax after our flight and settle into Costa Rica!
For me, the location was excellent. It is not downtown (so it's quiet, with no traffic noise), and there is, very close, a good bus service to downtown. Also, there is a branch of Auto Mercado only 10 mins walk away (best quality supermarket in CR, owned by Costa Rican company). Even closer is a branch of Pali (cheapest supermarket, but owned by Walmart).
The hotel did what it needed to. Clean and the staff were helpful. The aircon wasn't working properly and so they moved our room without an issue.
In hindsight we wouldn't have stayed in downtown San Jose as it's all a bit run down, but if you want to be in the centre of town then this hotel will do the job.
The hotel is a convenient and affordable option for a short stay in San Jose. We stayed for one night after arriving in costa rica. We really liked the breakfast. You can opt for continental (pancakes) or costa rican (gallo pinto) and the coffee was great. The staff was very friendly and speaks good English.
Excellent location downtown San Jose for Museum, Architecture, live musicians & artisans merhcants displaying their work on the brick stone walkway. Very very convenient to markets, an array of freshly prepared ethnic food sites everywhere, fresh fruits & spices.
Great location.
The building is older so there are some nice flourishes such as some tiled corridors and plant-filled patios. I think the staff is friendly and helpful. I also liked the location as downtown San Jose is close. Meantime, the street seemed seldom-used so it was rather quiet.
The place is well disposed for solo traveler: locker, box to store items in the bed, bathroom to hang your clothes and items, … Clean and facility on top. There is also a nice rooftop space.
Also the neighborhood seems much better than the rest of downtown San Jose.
Really nice hotel with comfortable clean room. The dining area on the 5th floor has great views of the city. Food was quiet good although a bit on the expensive side. There is not that much to do in San Jose but the location of the hotel is very central.
The hotel was a good location for our needs. It had free parking in a secure lot. A short, easy walk to downtown San Jose and restaurants. The rooms were basic, but clean and comfortable. The outdoor area was nice, and my group enjoyed the hot tub.
What a gem of hotel in San Jose.
Good Food, Clean Room, generally clean premises and a good pool for a dip after a busy 10 days around costa rica. Only stayed 1 night but would be ideal for a short city break.
Location of the hotel is perfect to walk around in San Jose. Breakfast was included in the plan and was very good. Also it was nice that Costa Rican coffee powder was prepared in the room.
A very relaxed, attractive & comfortable hotel in a quiet part of San Jose, but just a short taxi ride to the downtown sites. The staff were exceedingly friendly & the food was good.
