Strahan is a small fishing town on the West Coast of Tasmania, its population at the 2011 census was 824, which swells considerably during the summer months. Weather in Strahan can be unpredictable, with average temperatures in summer only reaching low 20 degs Celsius, and rainfall higher than average for Tasmania; you have been warned, bring a warm jacket even in summer, just in case of a cold Antarctic blast coming through or rain front from the Southern Ocean. But when the sun shines there is no better place to be, and that is the beauty of Strahan and the West Coast of Tasmania. Situated 300 kms (4.5 hrs) from Hobart and 270 kms (4.0 hrs) from Launceston respectively, the drive from both main centres is spectacular, with magnificent rain forest, mountain ranges, mountain peaks, lakes and historic buildings welcoming you at every turn. It is not a drive to rush, take your time and enjoy it; but be warned Tasmanian roads are notoriously winding, having said that though, there are generally few vehicles to contend with in the regional areas.
