An Ancient University Town with Fascinating Culture
In the southwest corner of Castile and Leon, the Spanish city of Salamanca is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old City is one of the most beautiful Renaissance cities in Europe.

Founded by King Alfonso IX in 1218, the University of Salamanca has more than 3,500 international students and teachers. Known for its Spanish courses for non-native speakers, the university houses a huge library with more than 150,000 invaluable volumes.

Salamanca is a lovely city and definitely worth a visit. We stayed 3 night and were able to see everything we wanted without rushing. It is a walkable city. We came by train and left by bus. We used the local bus only once, and that was to get to our apartment. We were there during Easter weekend, so reservations are important. If you want to really know Spain: Visit Salamanca. I think it is underrated for what it is. Every corner of the city will surprise you with its rich cultural heritage. One of our favourite cities in Spain - magnificent historic centre with a fantastic cathedral and jaw dropping Plaza Mayor. The university student population give the city a buzzy feel and the wide choice of bars and restaurants are generally excellent.

The historical visits to monuments are numberless and the gastronomy very good.
