If you’re looking for an authentic, off the beaten travel...
If you’re looking for an authentic, off the beaten travel destination and you like food, history and nature, PLEASE go to El Bierzo. It’s a gorgeous region with so much to offer – fantastic hiking, picturesque little towns, incredible historical sites, amazing food (the cured meats and vegetables – think roasted red peppers – are especially delicious) and really, really good wines. There are fairly good services and you’ll be able to find comfortable, pleasant hotels, really great restaurants and everything else you need but it hasn’t really been “discovered” which means it’s still pretty cheap. There are plenty of wineries to visit and many of them offer lodging, plus there are sooo many incredible historic sites to visit, palaces and Templar castles and prehistoric ruins and Roman gold mines…
Hotel Villa de Cacabelos is an excellent hotel with very nice, clean rooms. They also serve breakfast etc. Nearby are shops and other facilities like a medical center. The hotel is on the Camino de Santiago. Television with many channels in all languages. Electric window blinds. Very good WIFI. Friendly, helpful staff. Cacabelos is a medieval village, less touristic than e.g. Villafranca. Pilgrims might stay a while, rest, and then move on to Galicia.
I hadn’t planned on staying in town but needed a place suddenly… this turned out to be one of the best hostels I stayed at on the entire Camino!
staff was friendly, and hard working. room was clean, and I happened to have no other people in mine (4 Bds) so I effectively got a hotel experience for only $20.
nice modern shower, modern tv, comfortable bed, secure lockers/facility, and air conditioning!
Nicely renovated hotel close to everything and yet still very quiet and peaceful. The woman at the front desk was 100% friendly and helpful throughout my stay. (Note to management - give her a pay raise. Good staff are the best advertising). The hotel has an elevator.
Very pleasant and welcoming hotel. Great location in the heart of old town with bar and restaurant on site. Very friendly and efficient staff. Quiet and relaxing stay. Lovely room with view of cathedral next door. Would definitely stay there again. 👍
We booked for the Hostal but at check-in were upgraded to a room in the Monclea without extra charges. The Monclea is superb rustic style luxury hotel with all amenities (restaurant, bar, shop selling local products). It was a fabulous.
Hotel is in the middle of downtown. The restaurant was open for guests, but not the evening we arrived. It seems to be only open for coffee, but might have more at some other time. Restaurants and bars were in easy walking distance.
The most impressive part of this hotel is the friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff. The breakfast was more than adequate and the situation of the hotel,5 minutes walk from the centre,is perfect.
The young woman who answered the phone and tried to direct me to the other place where I had to pick up the key finally had to come to the hotel and let me in.
It’s a very nice hotel with a lovely restaurant and sitting area. we had a great jacuzzi that helped us get proper rest to continue our Camino de Santiago.
