Set on a peninsula overlooking the waters of the Pacific Ocean, Mount Maunganui is an extinct volcano rising to 230 metres above sea level.
Formed almost three million years ago, it's also a sacred Māori archeological site featuring extensively in local mythology. This self-guided walking tour will take you to the summit of the mountain – known as 'The Mount' or 'Mauao' – where an ancient Māori fortress used to reside. As you make your way along various hiking trails, you'll be given insights into the history of this sacred place and the battles that used to take place between the Māori and European settlers.
